God's Wonderful Love
Saturday May 13, 2006
This reading is taken from the commentary on the letter to the Romans by Saint Cyril of Alexandria, bishop (Cap. 15,7: PG 74, 854-855)
Through many, we are one body, and members one of another, united by Christ in the bonds of love. Christ has made Jews and Gentiles one by breaking down the barrier that divided us and abolishing the law with its precepts and decrees. This is why we should all be of one mind and if one member suffers some misfortune, all should suffer with him; if one member is honored, all should be glad. Paul says: Accept on another as Christ accepted you, for the glory of God. Now accepting one another means being willing to share one another's thoughts and feelings, bearing one another's burdens, and preserving the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. This is how God accepted us in Christ, for John's testimony is true and he said that God the Father loved the world so much that he gave his own Son for us. God's Son was given as a ransom for the lives of us all. He has delivered us from death, redeemed us from death and from sin. Paul throws light on the purpose of God's plan when he says that Christ vecame the servant of the circumcised to show God's fidelity. God had promised the Jewish patriarchs that he would bless their offspring and make it as numerous as the stars of heaven. This is why the divine Word himself, who as God holds all creation in being and is the source of its well-being, appeared in the flesh and became man. He came into this world in human flesh not to be served, but, as he himself said, to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Christ declared that his coming in visible form was to fulfill the promise made to Israel. I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, he said. Paul was perfectly correct, then, in saying that Christ became a servant of the circumcised in order to fulfill the promise made to the patriarchs and that God the Father had charged him with this task, as also with the task of bringing salvation to the Gentiles, so that they too might praise their Savior and Redeemer as the Creator of the universe. In this way God's mercy has been extended to all men, including the Gentiles, and it can be seen tat the mystery of the divine wisdom contained in Christ has not failed in its benevolent purpose. In the place of those who fell away the whole world has been saved. | | | |

Where I am going you know the way. Thomas said to him, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:4-6
This one statement that Jesus made has become for us a huge guide. He let us know in this Gospel how to get to God. It is through him and only him.
How can we know too that he is the way? Because he is the one who has been sent to give us the way. All through the Old Testament, we have been given so much about God it is confusing. Is he an evil God as someone kindly pointed out to me. Because of letting battles being won in his name, or defeating foes. They called upon God for vengeance. Jesus came to fulfill and to show us the right way to God. It is through him and through love. He is right, he is the way, the truth and the life.
Love is the way, not the thinking that if God loves us he would destroy the enemy. That is not love. It relieves the hurts, it does not cure it. Sometimes we seek God to destroy, not realizing that the one we want destroyed probably has more love in them, than we do, after all aren't we the one's looking to destroy. Or seeking a destructive sign because of vengeance, this is not love either. We have thought so many vile things that seek answers from God, that are not his way.
It is in and through Jesus that we understand God's way, the truth that God is Love.

The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me. From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. John 13:18-20
Jesus knew of the betrayal beforehand, he mentions it, so they will know that what he says about who he claims is truth. That he is "I AM," and in that context he is one with God. He gives us something else to think about too, whoever receives the one he sends receives him. He will be sending us his very self in the Eucharist. His presence in the Eucharist is tangible, he is one with our Father, in the Bread of Life. He gives us also his apostles, who have brought him to us through the years. They receive him by the very hands of the Bishops. We receive from these men passed down to us a gift of God's love, his very self. When they minister and consecrate the host they bring forth Jesus' all encompassing presence. That is why the call of the Priesthood is very special. A belief that they act in God's stead has to be present in each one, that they bring forth the spirit of our Lord in consecration. If there is no belief that this is so, then we do not receive him as he says in today's Gospel. How would it be possible to have our Lord when the hands that consecrate do not receive him in faith also.
He is who he is, Jesus is I AM, he reigns supreme within our hearts when we receive him from the one's he sent.

I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness. John 12:46
The whole mystery of how Jesus was conceived should indicated what and from whom he came from. The Holy Spirit covered her, he is light. Upon the night of his birth, a light signaling his birth appeared. Many miracles were performed that no mere man could do without light from God. Jesus underwent torture no man could survive. Then we come to his resurrection, where again we witness his light. And for this we know that through Jesus we will no longer be in darkness.
We have so very much today to keep us in darkness, it's a shame that many turn away from this beautiful gift of God. The gift of his Son. We have so many things that bring light to our life such as lamps lit by electricity, or flashlights lit by battery power. Then we have kerosene lamps, oil lamps, candles. All these are external. What Jesus gives is internal light, a light from within. This is a perpetual light, that is only extinguished when we shut it off, deliberately. When we do that we condemn ourselves. That is when we remove ourselves from God completely.
Jesus wants us to live in him to have light eternal, where the flames never go out. His light is quite beautiful, there is nothing to ever fear living within the light of God's love.
I thank you Jesus for coming into this world as light, a light that burns constant for love for us. So we may live in the way of your truth, your way and your life. God Bless you Jesus for gracing us with an everlasting love.

I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one can take them out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one. John 10:28-30
A man finds a woman and they marry to become one, just as Adam and Eve are one. We have children from a union with two made one. We become one as a family, united in spirit. A mother worries about her family, a dad worries about his family, a child worries about their family. A person would have to be heartless not to have these feelings. How often do mothers stay up worried , or know something is wrong. Dads often go to lengths to protect their own. We KNOW our unit of family, because we are one with each other. So it is with God and his Son. They go to lengths to protect us in their way. When we live in unity with God we come to know him as well, just as we do with those we are born from. God entrusted us to his Son, who suffered to show us his way is love. He rose from the dead in order to give us life. It is through Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life. This is where eternal life begins. So think about the close family relationship we have at home, and then add Jesus along with our daily life. It's not hard to do. After all we are one with our families. Or are we?
